Nordic Naturals Review
Nordic Naturals is one of the most well known brands of fish oils and related products in the supplement industry and they have a fantastic line of human products. When we heard they were producing a line of dog supplements for providing Omegas, we had to try it.
Here is what Nordic Naturals says about their product:
Nordic Naturals Pet Omega-3 is an exceptionally pure, fresh source of the important Omega-3 fatty acids. It comes in an easy to administer capsule without a strong fishy smell or taste. Omega-3 fatty acids support healthy cells, skin and coat, joints, heart, brain, eyes and energy levels for your pets. Omega-3 Pet uses the same oils and quality standards as Nordic Naturals human products. Derived exclusively from wild Arctic anchovies and
sardines, product exceeds stringent quality standards for purity and freshness...
When we received our test bottle of their Omega-3 Pet, we opened it and out came what looked like a typical liquicap with some kind of oil inside. Much like a vitamin E capsule. While these kinds of liquicaps are easy for humans to swallow, they always prove to be a challenge for consumers to fee to their dogs. This proved true once again with our reviewers. If there is one kind of product the reviewers dislike feeding it is the capsule and liquicap. It is so much more user-friendly to simply develop a chewable that is palatable. Of course this is the most expensive option so many manufacturers choose not to go this route.
Of all the fish oil products on the market, it would be the safest bet to use Nordic Naturals because of their reputation for providing mercury-free oils in their supplements on the human market. It is clearly stated in their literature that they use the same grade oils for animal consumption, but we are always curious when a company's primary business is structured this way. Many companies whos main business is human consumption will develop a pet product as a secondary market for those batches which do not meet testing standards for humans. There is very little regulation for pet supplements so you really have to take their word for it.
The only other observation we would make with this product is that providing these liquicaps to a dog is introducing a lot of oil to their diet which is not necessarily a healthy thing. it is very easy to alleviate one concern by providing Omegas in their diet and creating another concern with the form those Omegas take.
As with most liquicaps, this is a very difficult product for most consumers to feed to their dogs on a daily basis. It is also very high in oils which can be a risky venture for most dogs. There are lots of chewable products on the market that provide the same level of Omegas from non-fish sources which are much safer and easier to use.
